Types of Education - Apprenticeships

This page merely provides an overview of the subject matter.
To learn more, please visit the web sites found on the Resources page.

Key Points

  • Apprenticeship is the ultimate low-cost training option - you actually get paid to learn a skill!
  • It is one of the oldest forms of training and probably dates back to ancient Egypt.
  • Apprenticeships typically train employees in hands-on activities, although some "book knowledge" is usually also required.
  • To work as an apprentice, you must apply with an apprenticeship sponsor.
  • The application process can vary considerably, depending upon the target career, whether it's a national or state apprenticeship, and the admissions criteria of the apprenticeship sponsor.
  • Apprenticeships vary considerably in length. Many are 4-year programs, but they can be as short as 1 year or as long as 5 years.
  • Apprenticeships are competitive, and you may be required to meet specific educational requirements.

Apprenticeship - a period of undergoing practical instruction in one's job or career.

For some Career Clusters such as "Business, Management and Administration," apprenticeship plays only a minor role in the education and training of employees. For other Career Clusters such as "Manufacturing and Architecture and Construction," apprenticeship is a vitally important component of workforce training.

Simply put, apprenticeship connects employers looking for qualified workers with job seekers wanting to learn new skills. The employer providing the apprenticeship is known as the apprenticeship sponsor, although sponsors may also include employer associations and joint labor-management organizations. In any case, the sponsor provides apprentices with paid on-the-job training and academic instruction.

The result is win-win: workers receive industry-driven training and employers gain a competitive edge.
